Know Your Expert Campaign: Why True Expertise Matters

Introduction:
Expertise is not self-declared—it is built, earned, and recognized. In relation to 'skin experts', understanding who is truly qualified is critical for safe and effective care. In particular, for skin of colour, choosing the right expert can prevent misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, hyperpigmentation, and scarring.

The Three Pillars of True Expertise:

Training

  • Structured medical education
  • Specialist qualifications
  • Years of learning, not weekend courses

Experience

  • Real patients, real conditions
  • Clinical decision-making over years, not months
  • Depth that can only come from practice

Output

  • Peer-reviewed research, publications, teaching
  • Contributions that advance the field
  • Recognition from peers, not self-declaration

Why Expertise Matters:

  • Protects patients from harm
  • Advances safe, evidence-based care
  • Particularly critical in areas where misinformation is common, like skin of colour dermatology

Connection to Intentional Living:
Knowing who to listen to is also part of centering yourself in life. Just as we choose carefully what we feed our minds, our attention, and our energy, we must also choose carefully which experts guide us. Intentionality in learning and in care protects your time, your energy, and your well-being.

Closing :
As part of the Know Your Expert campaign, I encourage you to pause, reflect, and ask:

Who am I listening to, and why?
True expertise matters. Seek it. Recognize it. Honour it.
