I am back from an incredible few days at the Emirates Society of Dermatology Conference in Dubai-an event that was as inspiring as it was educational.
I presented two lectures: one on hair disorders revealing systemic conditions (this was based on cases from my practice, including an 11-year-old with premature hair greying which led to investigations for Wilson's disease), and another on assessing human skin colour in clinical practice and research, introducing our newly proposed Eumelanin Human Skin Colour Scale.
Beyond the science, what stayed with me was a conversation with an Emirati guide: "Becoming number one is easy; staying number one is the toughest." When i prompted him about what it takes to stay number one, his answer was simple: "Teamwork." That ethos of teamwork was everywhere-in the conference, the city and the people. Everybody was truly invested in building and elevating the country.
A huge thank you to Drs Ayman Al-Naeem, Fatima Saleh Salem Albreiki and the whole team at the Emirates Society of Dermatology for inviting me to be a part of this inspiring conference.
